Delhi should stop foreign mischief in Kashmir | | | There does not seem any end to foreign countries' pressure on India for the settlement of the Kashmir issue. While some want New Delhi to agree on a third-country mediation, others favour bilateral dialogue for the resolution of the Kashmir issue.Latest to mount pressure on New Delhi for settling the Kashmir issue is the European Parliament which has linked Kashmir issue with Free Trade Agreement (FTA).The resolution adopted by the Parliament has stated that huuman rights, democracy and security are essential elements of the relationship between EU and India. Therefore" we call on both the sides to ensure that dialogue on open issues is stepped with particular reference to Kashmir.” The resolution for expediting the dialogue over the Kashmir issue comes in the wake of Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s visit to EU headquarters at Brussels last month and the frequent trips of its Ambassadors to Jammu and Kashmir to meet different shades of the opinion.Earlier, the EU had termed Kashmir as world’s most beautiful prison and its Parliament had also passed the resolution asking New Delhi “to urgently ensure independent and impartial investigations into all suspected sites of mass graves in Jammu and Kashmir. The Kashmiri separatists have welcomed the EP Parliament resolution. And none other than chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq welcomed the EP resolution of linking FTA with Kashmir“This is a positive development as far as the Kashmir issue is concerned. We have been seeking their facilitation for resolving the dispute. I met different Parliamentarians of EU during my visit to Brussels in first week of May and apprised them about different aspects of the issue,” Mirwaiz has stated. These two incidents, adoption of the resolution by the EP and its welcome by the separatists, clearly speak volumes about the intentions of foreign powers in interferring in the internal matters of India.Even if by any stretch of imgination one may call the Kashmir issue as a dispute between India and Pakistan why should these foreign powers try to either mediate between New Delhi and Islamabad or mount pressure on Delhi for stepping up the pace of dialogue for the resolution of the Kashmir issue. These two events also need to make the Government of India wiser enough so that it initiates measures that could discourage separatists in their plan of visiting foreign countries on one pretext or the other. Delhi needs to be wise enough to convey to the foreign missions in New Delhi that their officials are free to visit Kashmir as tourists but they should avoid promoting easy interaction with separatists who usually feed the diplomats with a wrong picture and with concocted events and incidents.. There are a number of countries in the world which face varied problems based on conflict with other nations but India has not shown any interest in imposing itself on the warring nations for the purpose of mediation.Yes,whenever New Delhi has been requested for mediation or intervention it has done so willingly and to the satisfaction of both the contending nations. In fact the problem in Kashmir has been aggravated by the way the foreign powers have been trying to convert the scenic valley into a playfield of international intrigues.Since 1951-52 the valley has been a playground for international conspiracies. It would have not happened had not the disgruntled local political leaders went on harping on implementation of the UN resolution. It would not have happened had not Pakistan providing diplomatic, moral and material support to the ongoing insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir.Islamabad and its official agencies, including the Army and ISI,have been aiding and funding the proxy war against India in Jammu and Kashmir which has invited attention at the international level.Delhi needs to take required steps for disarming those who wish to mediate on Kashmir issue.
