Kishtwar a land of saffron and sapphire

UDHAMPUR, June 14: Kishtwar is popularly known as 'Land of Sapphire and Saffron' , situated on the banks of the Chenab the town has remained very famous for its natural beauty, religious places and political supremacy.
Kishtwar is situated 220 kilometers far from Jammu. Place is emerging as one of the favourite tourist destinations after the initiative and developmental measures taken by Kishtwar development authority created by State government , the number of tourists flocking in the region has increased considerably during past few years .
There are many things to enjoy here. In the center of the Kishtwar there is a big play ground/ grazing field called Chowgan. Its area is about 520 canals or 165 acres. It is surrounded by Chinar, Deodar and different kinds of trees. It is the main attractive place in the Kishtwar district. On its North there is a big temple called Gori Shanker Mandir and in its south there is a Shrine (Ziyarat) namely Asrar-Ud-Din- Bagdadi.’.
Maximum number of people are used to walk on this ground in the morning and evening. number of villages are surrounded to this playground that adds its beauty.
This ground acts as intermediate between these places. There is a place popularly called Char-Chinar where four Chinar's tree are equally distant from each other which looks like a square in shape.
According to Anil Parihar a Prominent social and political figure Kishtwar is extremely popular among tourists for the Kishtwar national park that includes the catchment areas of Kiar, Nanth and the Kibar streams.
Animals such as the Snow Leopard, Antelope, Wild Yak and the Tibetan Ass can be commonly sighted in this park.Saffron is also cultivated in number of villages here .
He added that at a distance of 19 kilometers from Kishtwar lies the holy pilgrimage of Sarthal Devi. The shrine of Sarthal Devi is well known for its historical importance. The statute of the 18-armed Goddess is a prime attraction at Sarthal Devi.
Famous Chandi mata shrine is also at Machil in Kishtwar district Which is also famous for its sapphire mines that are located at Paddar.
Farooq Ahmed local resident said that that there are several Muslim shrines in Kishtwar. Tours to Kishtwar offers you an unique opportunity to visit the sacred Sufi shrines like of Asrar-Ud-Din- Bagdadi that reflect the culture of this region . Local residents alleged government not bringing area on tourist map as place being linked with Kashmir on one side and Himachal on another side has big potential to emerge as major tourist destination.
