PDP has come on top of table in Panchayat polls: Mehbboba
6/14/2011 9:21:37 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, June 14 (KNS): Peoples Democratic Party president, Mehbooba Mufti, Tuesday said the arrival of her party at the grass roots marks an important development in the political dynamics of Jammu and Kashmir. “Nobody can sell Kashmir or the interests of the state anymore in view of the emergence of PDP as a strong and sincere voice of the people that aims at empowerment of every individual living here,” she told a meeting of newly elected sarpanchs and panchs of Budgam.
“Like most other areas of the state the party has come on top of the table in the Panchayat elections in Budgam,” she claimed.
Mehbooba said Panchayat polls were not just a test of popularity of various parties but for growing organizations like the PDP it provided an opportunity to reach and develop a committed cadre in every village.
“This was of course a significant gain for the party but this election is more as a positive development for the polity of the state that had been a victim of monopoly, deceit and exploitation at the hands of a single party. Emergence of a credible alternative would provide people with a choice as in any democratic system which would promote political accountability and transparency,” she said.
The PDP president claimed the National Conference had understandably found itself struggling in the Panchayat elections in view of its constantly disastrous record of performance. “Although people had given it large mandates on some occasions but the party failed every time to honour its pledges and had exploited it only for personal comfort at the cost of state’s interests,” she said.
Pointing out to the ‘sell-out of water resources, power projects and J&K Bank’, she said, “Now it seems the oldest party of the state had lost its unique capability to take people for a ride and has convincingly been rejected as is evident from these polls” she told the village Panchayat members.”
Mehbooba said PDP led coalition had laid solid foundations for economic recovery, social growth and more importantly a political process that had led to peace reconciliation. “The decades long siege of the state had shown significant signs of relaxation and people had sensed hope and a way out of the endemic Kashmir problem. But she regretted it had been reversed to the extent that the present government has to make application of sec 144 and laws like PSA a permanent feature for its survival.”
Referring to the problems of development in Budgam area Mehbooba said the district had a huge potential for tourism. “Being endowed with exquisite natural beauty the previous government had started programmes for tourism development on a large scale which have been shelved.”
Speaking on the occasion Aga Syed Mehmood said that the Tourism Development Authorities of Dhodpathri and Yusmarg and projects in Tosamaidan, Khag and other places have virtually been wound up in absence of proper follow up. He said and asked the new village representatives to press in a democratic and peaceful way for answers to questions of inefficiency, neglect and corruption.
