Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 14: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has shown Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah sitting on a sofa and the Dogra king on the mat on his twitter page. The Chief Minister has not only hurt the feelings of Jammu people but is liable of brazenly distorting historical facts as well.
Omar needs to study Kashmir history a fresh to clear his confusion. After July 13 incident, the representatives of Kashmir submitted a memorandum to Maharaja Hari Singh. It is a detailed memorandum which was later printed by somebody. The title page speaks volumes about the respect that Hari Singh commanded from the leaders. The leaders have prefixed all the adjectives that they had knowledge of to the king's name. Raja Sahib, Sahib Bahadur are some of them. Early Times is in possession of a copy of the title page.
In September 1931, Mirwaiz Yusuf Shah called for Jehad against the Dogra rulers. People assembled near Khanyar. They were armed with sticks, shovels and iron rods. Some of them even carried guns. Maharaja was furious. He called the leaders to his palace. When they arrived, maharaja was fiddling with a pistol and had taken off his headgear. He scolded the leaders including Yusuf Shah. Shah, it may be mentioned, was more powerful than Sher-e-Kashmir in those times. The leaders could not utter a single word and called off the Jehad in fifteen minutes.
Sher-e-Kashmir was arrested in 1946 for Quit Kashmir Movement. He was, however, released in 1947 when Indian leaders including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawahar lal Nehru intervened. Maharaja did not succumb initially. He sought a written apology from Sher-e-Kashmir which he tendered willingly. The historical document has been published in Sardar Patel's papers. It is also published by budding historian from Kashmir Ashiq Husain Bhat in his book.
