Help Age India released report on “Elder Abuse & Crime in India | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 15: Jammu unit of HelpAge India, an international NGO working for the welfare of elders today released the nationwide report on“Elder Abuse & Crime in India” in Old Age Home Ambphalla, Jammu. Report was released by Hakim Singh Billoria, secretary all J&K senior citizen’s friendship association and by Vijay Kumar Bagotra, Secretary Home for the Aged and Infirm, Ambphalla. On the occasion of “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day” the HelpAge India a charity working for the aged, released its nationwide report on “Elder Abuse & Crime in India” bringing out some startling facts from a study was conducted across 9 cities. It was observed that on a national level, Elder Abuse is highest among the 70 plus elderly and it’s mostly elderly women who face abuse due to dependence on sons. The qualitative component included in depth interviews carried out with respondent such as Legal Experts, Police Officers, Medical Experts, Social Welfare Officer, Community Based Organizations (CBOs) & Psychologists says that nationally Daughter-in-law emerged as the major abuser of the elderly (63.4%), followed by the son (44%) from the lower socio economic strata, as against the son (53.6%) last year in the higher socio economic strata. Others present on the occasion were Vijay Kumar Gupta, Keemti Lal Dubey and HelpAge India Jammu team.
