Fotedar's remarks music for PDP ears | | | For majority of politicians in India party interests remain above friendship. On several occasions intimate friends have turned political foes for petty political interests.Jammu and Kashmir state is no exception to this political scene.During the crucial years Mufti Mohd.Sayeed kept the congress flag flying in Jammu and Kashmir as PCC Chief. If the Congress is alive in the state today it is because of Mufti's efforts because he could keep the congress flock together which helped the party to withstand opposition from a towering political leader of the stature of Sheikh Abdullah. But when differences cropped the Mufti quit the Congress at a stage when he had not dreamt of gaining political power by bcoming the first Kashmiri Muslim to be appointed as the Union Home Minister. He had not liked to be suffocated in the Congress even if he had enjoyed power as Union Minister for Tourism.Whether in the Congress or in the Jan Morcha or as Union Minister or as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir or as patron of the PDP he has shown the art of maintaining friendship irrespective of the party affiliation. This art has been adopted by his,one time disciple,Makhan Lal Fotedar, known to be quite close to the Gandhi-Nehru family.Even as being a senior Congress leader,a leader who continues to be trusted by the UPA chairperson,Sonia Gandhi, and other members of the Congress high command Fotedar has shown no hesitation in praising the erstwhile PDP-Congress Government led by Mufti Sayeed.Fotedar, who has served both in state and union cabinet, described former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir as ‘golden era in the history of the state.’He also asserted that Kashmir issue would have been resolved had Mufti Muhammad Sayeed been allowed to continue as Chief Minister in 2005 by Congress high command.“The decision was changed at last minute. Even Congress Working Committee had passed resolution for his continuance. Kashmir issue would have ceased to exist had he been allowed to remain in office for another three years.. Fotedar has not stopped here.As an old dear friend of the Mufti Fotedar has gone to the extent of saying that had the Mufti been allowed to continue as Chief Minister after 2005 he would have been instrumental for converting the LOC into a permanent border as he had succeeded in reopening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road for which he had received full support from the Congress. This adulation of the Mufti may not find favour in the National Conference circles. But Fotedar knows the art of damage control. He has shown this art when he ruled out the possibility of change of guard in Jammu and Kashmir saying that there was no scope for a rotational Chief Ministership because at the time Omar was appointed Chief Minister the Congress high command had agreed to his demand that he be given an opportunity to function as head of the Government for full six-year term. Also,he has made it clear that there were no differences betrween the congress and the National Conference. But his praise for the Mufti's rule indicates that neither the PDP nor the Congress has burnt the bridges that link the two together.Even without any alliance the PDP leadership continues to maintain its link with the senior Congress functionaries in New Delhi. And the Congress leadership has welcomed its relationship with the PDP which it feels can help it in the Government formation if its differences with the National Conference widen.(eom)
