Observer's Notebook: PSOs For Every Tom, Dick and Harry | | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, June 15: A new breed of "leaders", not genuinely committed to politics, has raised its head fast in the state. Flaunting PSOs, they move everywhere with an "official" licence to lead the society astray. Politics, as a medium of serving society, is never on their agenda. They nurture the aim of carving out a political platform which they could exploit to grind their own axe. Though many of them have a criminal past, the prevailing political system in the state has made the going smooth for them till now. The government has given them PSOs despite the fact that there is no imminent threat to their lives. They are "protected" persons, but the fact remains that they have never done such things in their lives that could provoke anti-national, or anti-social elements to issue them life threats. The PSOs of another small time leader at New Plots carried his children school and brought them back home. However, after he resigned from NC, his PSOs were withdrawn by the government. A "beauty saloon" owner is also a leader and proud owner of a PSO. Courtesy: A senior police officer whose wife was the saloon's privileged customer. Politics is a way of making money for them and exercising their influence. A NC leader, who led a life of adversity and strove hard to establish his small business till 1998, is a rich man now. He contested assembly polls on NC ticket from a city constituency and lost to a BJP candidate. City's some top criminals were his chief campaigners and this probably had become the reason for his defeat. He now owns a wine shop and several buses. It is a rags to riches story for many in politics. Another small time leader, who had left Congress to join PDP and who travelled on others' scooters, was also a rich man now. He too owns a wine shop. At least two women leaders adopted the similar ways to become rich overnight. All these leaders have the distinct quality of always dancing attendance to their "godfathers". Their this habit has made them VIPs and policy makers. What a bad luck of the people! It has also been seen that many politicians make their PSOs accomplish several household and menial tasks. They mop floors, clean cars, repair snapped telephone and electric cables, bring vegetables from the market, carry torn chappals and shoes of their "masters" for repairs to cobblers and even polish shoes. This scribe is witness to situations where PSOs were humiliated and reprimanded by their keepers in front of guests. One can well imagine how, with such a low morale, these PSOs would be able to act as policemen whenever they were again posted in thanas. PSOs of some leaders could also be seen visiting newspaper offices to deliver their press notes. This way, they learn a new part of the job, not taught during their training period. They have been made to hold the unofficial status of "official" household servants. Immediate steps need to be taken to restore them their status and make them proud policemen, feels a senior police officer. He said though CID wing of the state police had few months back prepared a list of those, including the so-called leaders, who did not need protection, no steps were taken to deprive them of PSOs.The officer said PSOs be given only to those who really faced threat to their lives. |
