What Unique About K? | Fotedar ridicules HM Chidambaram | | Neha JAMMU, June 15: On June 13, senior Congress leader and former Union Minister ML Fotedar ridiculed Chidambaram and his unique-Kashmir-problem and unique-Kashmir-solution formulation and said that the accession of the state with India is final and irrevocable and that Chidambaram doesn't know anything about Jammu and Kashmir. "There is no question of J&K's accession with India being conditional. It is final and no one can challenge it," he said while ridiculing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, who say day in and day out that the accession of the state with India was "conditional." And, he ridiculed and cut to size Chidambaram saying "he speaks good English, but has no knowledge about Kashmir." He questioned Chidambaram's approach to the problem confronting the nation in Kashmir in response to one media query concerning the Chidambaram's last year statement that "Kashmir is a unique problem" and "needed a unique solution." What Fotedar said was a very timely intervention and it must put things in perspective, notwithstanding the fact that what Fotedar said was what is the actual position. There is nothing that could be termed under any situation as something unique with Kashmir and that should be dealt with in a unique manner. Kashmir is like other regions of the country and it acceded to India like all other princely states acceded. What, however, was significant was the fact that Fotedar chose Kashmir to counter and ridicule Chidambaram - Chidambaram who had made public his unique formulation in Kashmir last year while participating in the media persons' meeting. He is the first Congressman who took on Chidambaram and sought to clear the confusion the latter created in Kashmir by making a statement that had no historical basis whatever. It is hoped that the Congress leaders in the state would follow in the footsteps of Fotedar and do what they need to do to controvert the pernicious influence of the votaries of Pakistan, independence, autonomy and self-rule. Fotedar's attack on Chidambaram would be remembered for years for the simple reason that he entered the domain no Congressman had dared to enter. The Fotedar's attack was not the only attack on Chidamabaram. A day later, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa attacked him and demanded his resignation from the Union Council of Ministers. "He is a fraud. His continuance in the Union Council of Ministers is untenable. Our party has always maintained that Mr Chidambaram's victory was through fraudulent means. He did not win in the 2009 general elections. In fact, he lost the Lok Sabha election," she has said. And. she said so in New Delhi yesterday after meeting the Prime Minister. What she said has created a political storm at the national level. The AIADMK has already knocked at the doors of the Madras High Court and sought disqualification of Chidambaram from the Lok Sabha. The case is pending before the court since 2009. It needs to be underlined that the Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer had declared Chidambaram as not winner. It was only after three hours that the said verdict was reversed and Chidambaram was declared elected. It was hen that the AIADMK candidate Rajakannappan filed an election petition in the Madras High Court. It's really a piquant situation that we have in the country Home Minister whose credentials and victory are being openly questioned and challenged and that, too, at a time when the UPA II is passing through a very critical phase and is under attack from right and left. Chidambaram has hit back and said what the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said was a "gross contempt of court." But what Jayalalithaa has said undoubtedly weakened the moral authority of the Union Home Minister. The fact of the matter is that Chidambaram is under severe attack. Fotedar and others of his ilk are attacking him. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is attacking him. The BJP is also attacking him, saying his involvement as Finance Minister in the multi-crore 2G spectrum scam was neck-deep. It is disturbing that India has a Home Minister who, it seems, has forfeited his moral authority and become an object of contempt and ridicule. Not a good omen for India. |
