Early Times Report
SRINAGAR: Hitting back at ruling National Conference for calling him 'aasteen ka saanp', senior Congress leader and close confidante of Gandhi family Makhan Lal Fotedar today sought to know from NC, what it was doing in the company of snakes.
Talking to a local news agency, an angry Fotedar said "If Congress leaders are snakes, what is NC doing in the company of snakes." He accused NC of changing colors like chameleon. "In 1975 when Sheri-i-Kashmir, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah took over as Chief Minister, he accepted constitution of India whereby it's clearly mentioned that Kashmir is integral part of India. When Sheikh accepted accession to India, it was full and final, how can some one speak against it now," he asked.
Fotedar accused NC leadership of speaking in different tones at different places. "They say something in Srinagar and change it when they reach to Delhi. Let them say it in Delhi that J&K's accession to India was conditional," he dared NC. Giving background of Indira-Sheikh accord of 1975, Fotedar said "When I met Mirza Afzal Beig in November 1971, he said 'I accept accession with all its implications. He (Beg) told me that Sheikh wasn't ready to accept accession. But after fall of Dhaka in December 1971, Beg sent a letter to Congress leadership on February 6, 1972 where it was mentioned 'we accept accession with all its implications."
"It was in the backdrop of this letter that in 1975 Indira-Sheikh accord was signed and power was handed over to Sheikh Abdullah. How will NC now say that accession was conditional," he asked. NC had on Tuesday called Fotedar "aasteen ka saanp" who, according to it, had always conspired against NC and its 'sincere leadership.'
On rotational Chief Minister issue which has been making headlines off late, the veteran Congress leader said, "Agreement is that Omar will be Chief Minister for six years. However, it is upto (Congress President) Sonia jee and whatever decision she takes which will be full and final."
Asked whether he was satisfied with the performance of the coalition government in the state, he said, "I can't say it here. I'll submit the report to New Delhi." When insisted what he has mentioned in the report, Fotedar said, "Why you want to hear it from my mouth when you know yourself the performance of the coalition so far."
Asked to comment on Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's performance, he said, "I don't know him. I have never seen him. So how can I comment on him?" Asked about his purpose of visit to the Valley, he said, "I had come for Khirbhavani mela. But I also interacted with Congress workers and people to get there feedback."
