Rs 25,000 reward for tip-off on sex determination tests: Sham

SRINAGAR, June 16:
In a serious bid to discourage female foeticide and improve sex ratio,
the Government has instituted an award of Rs 25,000 for giving tip-off
about ultra sound clinics indulging in sex determination tests.
This was stated by the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Sham
Lal Sharma while addressing a press conference, here today.
The Minister said 2011 census has painted grim picture of sex ratio in
the State, necessitating to evolve efficient strategy to reverse the
trend. “The steep decline in the sex ratio over the last decade is
very alarming both for the society and government”, Sham said and
appealed all the right thinking people including the media to help in
bettering the sex ratio.
The Minister said 54 erring ultra sound clinics in Kashmir and 24 in
Jammu divisions have been sealed of the total 185 and 80 clinics
respectively operating in each division to arrest the practice of sex
determination.
As many as 50 referral vans fitted with Global Positioning System
(GPS) will be deployed on 1500 kms road length after every 30kms along
the national highway to promptly tackle casualties cropping up due to
road mishaps, Mr. Sham said and added the measure would help to bring
down accidental death rate by 70 per cent.
In order to contain mother-infant mortality rate efficiently,. Sham
said Mobile Medical vans are being shortly positioned in 11 high
focused districts of the State viz; Rajouri,Poonch, Udhampur, Reasi,
Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Leh, Kargil, Kupwara and Bandipora. These vans
will serve as comprehensive Medical Units capable of conducting
deliveries besides having provision for sophisticated medicare.
In addition, the Minister said 6 additional SNCUs in district
hospitals, 18 Stabilization units in FRUs and 20 Baby Care Corners in
PHCs will also be set up during the current fiscal. New birth waiting
rooms for the pregnant women in 10 PHCs will also be set up in the
remote areas of the high focused districts, he maintained.
