People protest against shifting of army post | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT POONCH, June 16:
People of Loran in Mandi Tehsil have, over a period of time become familiar with Army presence in their area wherein the Army post has completely merged with their daily lives. Apart from providing inherent security in once militancy infested region of Loran, the Army soldiers have clicked very well with the locals here. These soldiers have always stood for the ‘Awam’ in Loran and have always been accessible with respect to problems faced by the inhabitants of this hamlet, in the foothills of Pir Panjal Range.
On the sidelines of carrying out their counter terrorism drive, the Army company in Loran has contributed in its own way towards betterment of socio – civic standards of the area, through Operation Sadbhavna. However, the news of shifting of the post from Loran to elsewhere has come as a shock for the local population of Loran who have accepted the Loran company as part of their lives. Newly elected Sarpanch from Loran, Khadir Hussain expressed his unhappiness in no uncertain terms regarding this decision of the Army authorities to shift the post. He, in his efforts to persuade the Army authorities in changing their decision, met the local unit commander with representatives from several pockets of Loran region. During interaction with the Army authorities, the locals lauded the contributions made by the Army in the past and present. They also highlighted the assistance provided by the Army to the locals during earthquake of 2005. Bashir Ahmed, Wali Mohd Shaikh, Abdula Salam, Akbar Bhatt echoed similar concern and told that presence of the Army has been instilling confidence amongst the Awam. They even wrote an application to Commanding Officer, Rashtriya Rifles requesting him not to shift Loran Company Operating Base. Army Sources have revealed that shifting of company posts periodically is a routine matter and is meant to dominate inaccessible and remote areas with a view to improve overall security environment in the long run. It was further added that inspite of the proposed shifting of the company post out of Loran, the area as such will not be neglected or overlooked and presence of the Army, for the ‘Awam’ shall continue, hitherto fore.
