Has Govt shelved plan for establishment of Sharda University in Valley under separatists pressure | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 16: Has state Government deliberately shelved the plan regarding the establishment of Sharda University in Kashmir Valley mooted over six years back by the then Governor of the state Lt. Gen SK Sinha. According to sources the proposal for setting up of Sharda university in Valley was mooted by the then governor Lt Gen. Sinha and he sought opinion of various intellectuals and scholars from state and outside in this regard. The sources said that hundreds of kanals of land for the said purpose were identified by a team constituted by Lt. Gen Sinha in this regard near Berua Badgam in Kashmir valley for this purpose. But soon after Lt Gen Sinha demitted the office the plan was shelved completely by the State Government after the separatist and fundamentalist elements opposed the same. Bowing to their pressure the Government has not shown any willingness for the same despite some Hindu bodies have been pressing for it constantly for over ad decade now. Soon after the establishment of Mata Vaishno Devi University and Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah Technical university Rajouri and Islamic University in valley some Hindu organizations had stressed on establishment of Sharda University in valley. This suggestion was endorsed by the Government and the chairman of then Governor Sinha who was also the chairman of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) had shown his willingness that the Board will take an onus in establishment of the University in Kashmir Valley on the pattern of the three new universities set up in the state. Gen Sinha sought the opinion of country's top most intellectuals and scholars in this regard. And he constituted a team of some top officers to identify the land in this regard. But soon after he demitted the office the plan was thrown in cold storage on the insistence of separatist and fundamentalist forces, sources said. It may be recalled that Sharda was one of the ancient universities in South Asia in ancient times. It was situated along the world famous Sharda shrine presently in PoK. The students from South Asian countries like China, Russia, Afghanistan, Iran besides India used to seek degrees from this prestigious universities. After the Government decided to establish three universities in the state, it came under tremendous pressure from various quarters to set up a University on the name of Sharda to revive the ancient culture. The Government's decision to shelve the project has led to a lot of resentment among the Hindu organizations who said if there was not any problem in establishment of the other three universities why the plan for establishment of Sharda university was shelved by it. Criticizing the Government for its double standards Kundan Kashmiri president Kashmir Pandit Conference (KPC) and Vir Saraf of RIK said it is totally evident that the Government was not interested in revival of ancient Kashmiri culture. They also criticized the so called champions of Kashmiriyat saying if these people really mean Kashmiriyat they should come forward and launch a crusade for establishment of Sharda university in valley which was the basis of Kashmiriyat. |
