Is China or Pakistan bigger threat to India ? | | | Not only the Indian political leaders and academicians but the Army functionaries too keep on debating on a ticklish issue whether China or Pakistan is the biggest threat to India.Actually the question was first raised during the BJP led NDA Government in the centre in 2000-2003 when the then Defence Minister,George Fernandes, had stated that it was not Pakistan but China that posed the biggest threat to India. The then ruling leadership and the opposition Congress had not relished Fernande's remarks.Congress leadership even criticised him for his utterances. And whenever Beijing is seen encouraging its troops for intruding into the Indian territory or it lays claim on Arunachal Pradesh or some parts of Ladakh region or provides moral and material support to the Maoists and Naxlities many in India, including political leaders and Army functionaries, treat China the bigger enemy than Pakistan. Notwithstanding the fact the a large number of senior Army functionaries treat China as a bigger enemy of India than Pakistan the Northern Command's Army commander,Lt. Gen.K.T.Parnaik,holds a different opinion. He has stated that Pakistan continued to be the bigger threat for India as compared to China.“I believe that Pakistan continues to be the biggest threat for India. We have fought three wars with Pakistan besides Kargil”, GOC-in-C of the Northern Command Lt Gen KT Parnaik has said..However, he said the Indian army was well equipped and well prepared to meet any kind of external and internal challenge. In fact the remarks of the Army commander cannot be dismissed as untenable. These remarks need to be taken note of by those in India who are engaged in formulating the country's defence strategy and plans. These remarks need to be taken note of by the Ministry of Defence and by those who matter in the Army headquarters in New Delhi. It seems that Parnaik, being the Army commander, has intimate knowledge about Pakistan's anti-India plans and its level of assistance it was providing to militants and to the separatists. Well one may not dispute with the observations of Lt.Gen.Parnaik in view of the Pakistan sponsored proxy war against India in general and in Jammu and Kashmir in particular .When Gen.Parnaik talks about three wars and that of the Kargil conflict with Pakistan one may agree with him that Pakistan is a bigger threat to India than China which launched an armed attack once in 1962.But the part China is playing in providing heavy military aid besides missile technology to Pakistan can be more dangerous for India than the anti-India machinations by Islamabad. If Islamabad keeps on adopting inflexible and threatening postures against India it was because of continued Chinese aid and assistance.Even if Pakistan poses a bigger threat to India than China New Delhi has the capacity of dealing with any threat from Islamabad,as has been demonstrated in 1947,1965,1971 and 1999,but it may be difficult for India to tackle any armed invasion from China. No doubt the Indian defence system has registered phenominal progress since 1962 still we are far behind China in terms of man power and war machinery and equipment. As far as nuclear weapons, missle system, tanks and fighter aircrafts ar concerned China is ahead of India and hence can be treated as a bigger threat to India than Pakistan.
