Maratha colony seeks attention from state government

JAMMU, June 17: There is a war like situation going on in the Marathi colony located in the outskirts of Trikuta Nagar. Only four taps for 400 families in the Jammu city is creating a problem for the migrants in the city from across the country. The migrants sans basic needs have to face the dreadful diseases every year.
The scene at the Maratha slum colony near a posh locality of Trikuta Nagar, one of the largest slum settlements of migrant labourers is pitiful. The slum is under the authority of Jammu
Due to the lack of water many diseases such as typhoid, jaundice, fever takes place every year.
Marathi colony has a total of 500 families of different states which includes 250 Rajasthanis and 150 Marathis. For the 500 families a total of 7 taps have been provided out of which 5 taps are in working condition. In the Rajasthani area, there are about 4 taps for the families but only 2 are working which forms a ratio of 125 families: 1 tap.
Out of the 3 taps in the Marathi area about 50 families are provided with one tap which makes the people difficult to manage their water requirement.
Shivji Dhashrath Hathagare- a Marathi migrant complained that every family has a minimum of 5 members for them the water is being supplied for one and a half hour twice in a day but not regularly.
He said, “People usually fight for water as the time period for the water is very less due to which many families are not able to get the water regularly.
The Maratha colony was set up around forty years ago in city. Besides water many other important needs such as mobile bathrooms, proper drainage and garbage dumping system is not for them.
People of the colony pile up their garbage aside their colony whose foul smell make it difficult to sustain.
Charan – one of the oldest persons living in the area from last 25 years said that due to the unavailability of the bathrooms he sometimes does not go to the open ones.
