| Maj Rohit’s martyrdom day observed | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 17:
The martyrdom day of Major Rohit Sharma was observed today at Government Higher Secondary School, Mandi with great zeal and enthusiasm.
The programme was organized by Shaheed Major Rohit Sharma Memorial NGO to keep the populace aware of supreme sacrifices made by the Major Rohit Sharma who attained martyrdom in a search and strike of Army against terrorists in Poonch on 17 Jun 1998.
Brigadier VS Sreenivas, Commander Poonch Brigade was the chief guest on the occasion. The function was attended by army officers, civil official and locals in large number. The patriotic fervour of the event reached new high with the scintillating cultural programme presented by the local school children.
A memorial function and cricket tournament is organized every year by the NGO top commemorate the martyrdom day.
As part of this year’s celebrations, a cricket tournament was organized from 10 Jun to 15 Jun 11. A total of eight teams from Mandi, Sekhlu, Baila, Palera, Khet Sathra and Jalian participated in the tournament.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of Shaheed Major Rohit Sharma memorial NGO lauded the role of army and said that locals are grateful to Army and its martyrs who have ensured peace in their area and helped in shaping a bright future for the people of Mandi.
