Leh to witness longest Marathon run on Aug 11 | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jun 17: Coldest desert- Ladakh is poised to witness Everest Marathon-the High, covering a distance of 222 kms probably toughest ultra Marathon in world on 11th August this year. The 222 kms High Course Marathon will conclude on August 14, 2011 after a run up to Khardungla (180380 ft), the highest motor able mountain pass in the world, down to Leh, and then up again to Tanglangla (17583 ft) and finishing at Morey Plains with a 60 hours cut off. This was stated by Dr. Rajat Chauhan, Race Director and Co-Medical Director of Hamalayan Club during this brief meeting with the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora here this afternoon. Chauhan said the high average altitude, the partial pressure of oxygen is less than 40 percent than at sea level where the oxygen content of the air is less than 33 percent of what is at sea level. He said this race is a testament to human fitness and endurance, adding that the run takes place along the Leh-Manali Highway which is only open for four summer months during the year. He said it is his vision to get India fit (GIFT) by starting a movement to promote higher level of physical fitness amongst Indians and help the local community develop in Leh-Ladakh. The Minister assured him of every possible support from the Government. He said organizing the event in Leh is very beneficial as it would help to promote a pro-active domestic response to climate change in Ladakh region, which has suffered badly due to sudden and unprecedented flood of August 2010. Homes, schools, clinics and business establishment were badly hit in the calamity and the town is still in the process of recovery and reconstruction, he maintained. Jora hoped that the event would contribute tourist recovery process in a modest way besides contributing to local economy.
