DDC for conservation of ponds, traditional water tanks

JAMMU, JUNE 18- District Development Commissioner Jammu, Sanjeev Verma has asked the concerned functionaries to take measures for conservation and upkeep of traditional ponds and water tanks in Jammu and its peripheries.
He was speaking at a meeting of officers of Rural Development Department, Industries, Employment and Bankers convened to review the progress registered against centrally sponsored scheme MGNREGS, SGSY, JKSES, PMEGP during the year 2010-11 and till May this year under Annual Plan 2011-12.
He sought information about the works related to desilting of khuls, canals, minors, sub minor distributaries taken up during this year.
The DDC reviewed the progress made under MGNREGS during the year 2010-11 and ascertained the physical status of works including completed works, works in progress and mandays generated by providing wage employment to the job seekers registered under the programme (MGNREGS) and expressed his satisfaction on the achievements.
The DDC asked the RDD authorities to focus on works like development of ponds, wells, water conservation, plantation and establishment of nurseries. He stressed for laying special focus on taking up minor irrigation works on the lands of SCs, STs, Indira Awas beneficiaries and land reform beneficiaries as provided in the guidelines of MGNREGS.
Besides, he desired that land development and afforestation works be got executed in the peripheral areas of the ponds. The Additional District Development Commissioner was asked to identify common lands in consultation with the Revenue Officers for carrying plantation under MGNREGS.
Strict instructions were issued for maintenance and conservation of all existing ponds in the district and ADC was asked to personally monitor mapping of all ponds in the peripheral area of Jammu and arrange desilting and maintenance of the same.
