Disadvantage of being residents of Duggar land | Jammu Central University | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, June 18: Everyone in Jammu has been urging the concerned authorities to set up the sanctioned Central University (CU) in the land of the Dogras since months. Research scholars in the Jammu University, various student organizations and several socio-cultural and political groups, barring the BJP, the Congress, the NC and the PDP, have repeatedly urged the authorities to do the needful at the earliest so that the Dogras and others avail themselves of additional educational facilities and compete with others trained in prestigious educational institutions. They have even organized a bandh and several dharnas and protest marches during the last several months, but without evoking any positive response from the authorities. The failure of the authorities to establish the CU of Jammu has only further angered the Dogras with some of them now openly saying that if the Dogras of Jammu province, including Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs, are to obtain their legitimate due share in the country's socio-economic and political processes, they have no other option but to become independent of Kashmir. Such is the nature of their anger. The only sin of the Dogras is that they want the authorities to appoint a local academician as Vice-Chancellor of the CU of Jammu - a suggestion not taken kindly by the authorities. They wanted to impose on the CU of Jammu a person called Amitabh Mattoo who served the University of Jammu as Vice-Chancellor for 6 long years and vitiated the academic atmosphere in the premier educational institution of Jammu by politicizing everything, as also by encouraging activities calculated to create on the campus of Jammu University a Kashmir-like situation. The Dogras opposed his appointment saying Mattoo was more a "mercenary and separatist-friendly politician than an academician." This is the crime of the Dogras and they are paying a very heavy price for the crime they committed by opposing Mattoo. The most notable aspect of the whole situation is, as everyone knows, the inordinate delay in the establishment of the CU of Jammu. But the negative attitude of the authorities should not surprise anybody. After all, it is the Dogras and not the people of Kashmir and their leadership, who are demanding the implementation of what was promised to them several months ago, of course, under pressure from the agitating people. Jammu is not Kashmir. Jammu is Jammu, which doesn't warrant any consideration, and Kashmir is Kashmir, which is, according to the authorities, opinion leaders and think-tanks, the only factor in the state's political situation that deserves recognition and respect. In other words, the authorities in New Delhi and the authorities in the state do not consider the Dogras of Jammu an important factor and that's the reason they pay scant regard to the feeling and aspirations of the Dogras. The authorities are concerned only with Kashmir and the people it houses and, hence, a preferential treatment to them. The authorities would do well to recognize the Dogras of Jammu as part and parcel of the Indian society And, nothing would be more appropriate than that they should immediately establish the CU and accept all other demands of the Dogras, including the demand for political and economic empowerment. Not to do so or to continue to ignore the Dogras and focus only on Kashmir and its people would be only to further complicate the already rather complex situation in the state and create more inter-regional bitterness and animosity. |
