Can Omar have the last laugh? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 18: Notwithstanding Prime Minister's assurance of a full term, Omar Abdullah seems disturbed by the demand of rotational Chief Ministership. The assurance, according to, Congress workers is meaningless. "It is to be decided b y the party and not by the Prime Minister", they said. The Prime Minister will find it easy to implement his roadmap if a person like Omar Abdullah is at the helm of affairs for six years. However, Kashmir watchers hold a contrary view. According to them, a person like Omar Abdullah who last year challenged the totality of accession can pose problems for Manmohan Singh in the long run. Pertinent to mention here Omar Abdullah while addressing the Legislative assembly last year said Kashmir was an international dispute. The statement caused a strom in the sub-continent but helped Omar in taming gullible Kashmiris. So Omar, Kashmir watchers feel, is not a good choice for any roadmap seeking settlement within Indian constitution in future. Omar is likely to get support from some quarters within Congress when the party finally sits to decide the rotational Chief Ministership issue. But, the problem is that the State Congress unit is not united. Senior leaders have made clear that six-year term to Omar will prove disastrous to the Congress party in Jammu Kashmir. Former Sader-e-Riyast, Dr Karan Singh was recently in Srinagar. He told the agitating Congress leaders and workers in Srinagar on June 13 that he shared the view that the rotational chief minister-ship or the 2002 power-sharing formula between the Congress and the PDP alone could help the Congress retain its control over its constituency in the state. Karan Singh had even gone to the extent of saying that the continuation of Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister for full term would culminate in the reduction of Congress' vote share in the state. Omar Abdullah has every reason to laugh for the time being. But can he have the last laugh as well? |
