SKUAST organies farmers’ training at Tandwal | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Rajouri June 19: A week long farmer’s training cum demonstration programme was organised at Tandwal village near office of SKUAST-J, Rajouri from 12th June to 18th June 2011 by water management research center Chatha, Jammu vide a project of N. K. Gupta entitled, “Scaling up of water productivity for livelihood security through teaching cum demonstration”. Farmers from around 7-8 villages nearby Tandwal research station gathered with participation of farm women around 60-70 in number and around equal number of men farmers. They were trained in different aspects ranging from water conservation, efficient water utilization and management in agriculture as well as daily life. The farmers also learnt basics and specialities of different agricultural as well as animal science subject matter. The lectures were delivered by the expert in respective disciplines which include A.K. Singh (plant protection), A.P. Singh (agronomy), Sushil Sharma and Anil Bhushan (veg. science), Arvind Isher (entamology), J.S.Manhas (agri. extension) and K Y Deshpande (veterinary science). The farmers took notes of all the lectures and also their questions were satisfactorily dealt by the experts. Along with training activities farmers also received the inputs like hand tools to be used in agriculture and kitchen gardening, broachers of different subjects for guidelines in agriculture and better dairy production. The seeds were given to them as demonstrations to teach them the scientific knowhow of using improved seeds. To use these seeds and inputs effectively in the fields, the farmers were also trained about sowing of different crops and vegetables, their integrated nutrient management, integrated disease and pest management. The farmers were trained about the benefits of forming selfhelp groups, farmer’s clubs and their importance to uplift the livelihood status of farmers. N. K. Gupta trained the farmers about efficient use of water in agriculture by water harvesting in fields using locally collected materials and easily available cheap inputs to increase the productivity as well as roof harvesting unit and their utility in horticultural crops and kitchen garden. A.K. Singh guided them about control of diseases in maize crop through seed treatment and control of blast in paddy he asked farmers to dip seedlings with Bavistin solution. A.P. Singh addressed the critical stages of crops and appropriate drainage system. He suggested farmers to adopt line sowing and keep appropriate distance between the plants in different crops. Deshpande trained them about using locally available feed resources to formulate balanced ration for better dairy production and other animals of commercial importance. He also distributed the brochures containing information about locally available tree fodder and their utility in ration formulation. The dignitaries visited this training programme included Associate Director Research, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rajouri, A.K. Sharma, who interacted with the farmers and asked them to use this opportunity for their benefit. He also informed the farmers to contact RARS and KVK Rajouri for any problems in their crops and animals. Around 100 farmers / farm women were benefited in this programme.
