Mir, Qarra mull formation of third front
6/19/2011 9:11:10 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, June 19 (KNS): The formation of third front in Jammu and Kashmir is gaining momentum off late with Chairman Democratic Party (Nationalist) and Agriculture Minister, Ghulam Hassan Mir and Peoples Democratic Party leader, Tariq Hamid Qarra holding hectic deliberations to finalize the modalities, sources told KNS.
Mir and Qarra held a detailed meeting at the latter’s residence recently, where threadbare discussions were made as how to rope in estranged leaders of National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party in third front, sources said.
“Mir and Qarra are also in contact with Peoples Democratic Front chairman, Hakim Mohammad Yasin and CPI (M) State Secretary, M Y Tarigami over the formation of the third front,” sources added.
A reliable source told KNS that Congress high command in Delhi had asked Mir recently to join the state Congress. “Mir who recently met Congress Working Committee member and incharge Jammu and Kashmir Affairs Mohan Prakash in Delhi was told to join Congress. However, he (Mir) told the Congress leadership about his proposal of forming third front,” he said.
However, there are some hiccups in the formation of the front. “The most important problem is the issue that who would head the new front. There is no consensus among the stakeholders on the issue of heading the front and every leader is interested in heading the new political formation,” sources told KNS.
Mir, Hakim and Tarigami had tried to form third front ahead of 2008 Assembly elections in the state. However, the formation couldn’t happen at that time as Mir and Hakim fielded candidates against each other in several constituencies.
Mir who parted ways from PDP in 2007 had in April 2008 formed new party and at that time he announced third front of smaller political parties in Jammu and Kashmir will be formed. From May 2008 to November 2008, Mir, Hakim and Tarigami held several meetings, but couldn’t reach to any consensus.
