‘Tree talk’ completes six months | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, June 19 (KNS): Popular environmental-cum-tree afforestation and conservation programme ‘Tree Talk’ which started under the aegis of Forest Department on 19 December, 2010 successfully completed its six month long journey today. To mark the occasion, 33rd ‘tree talk’ was held under the guidance of O P Sharma Vidyarthi, a well-known environmentalist having authored several books on flora and fauna in different genres all focusing on forests and environmental themes. Over 45 participants participated in three hour long deliberations. Tassaduq Mueen, a noted Taxonomist and Horticulturist while sharing his views said that Chinar Bagh is a park of historical importance where British used to camp under the cool shade of Chinars. Amit Wanchoo Manager of the Bagh while welcoming the participants said that J&K Tourism Department took up the challenge of the restoration and improvement of its ambience to attract visitors to its beauty. Director Horticulture J L Sharma said that Department of Floriculture Kashmir has started campaign for Chinar planting and every year Chinar Day is observed on 15th March. Referring to his recent visit to China, he shared the fact that China has embarked upon Chinar planting on a large scale on all important roads. Chinese have meticulous planning, they transplant 4-5 metre tall well grown saplings and are transported to plantation site along with massive roots.Even aesthetic arrangement of chinar branching is taken care of by the planters. Regional Director PCB, Farooq Gilani while sharing his views highlighted the role of Civil Society in saying no to use of Polythene bags and helping in maintaining cleanliness of surrounding wetlands. He shared that 9 sewerage plants have been made functional along the vicinity of Dal lake and treated waste water is being discharged into the lake.
