J&K draws blank as Haryana wrestlers make clean sweep | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 19: Proving that the state posses real stuff in the indigenous game, Haryana wrestlers dominated the three-day event thereby clinching both boys’ and girls’ team titles in the 30th Boys and 13th Girls Junior National Wrestling Championships held at Gymnasium Hall, University of Jammu (JU), here today. Notwithstanding the fact that state fielded best stuff, host Jammu and Kashmir failed to open account in any of the three (two boys and one girls) events. However, what state earned out of this national meet was fifth position secured by Mohd Asif in 74 kg event of Greco Roman and eighth place by Deepak in 96 weight category of Free Style. One of the female wrestler, Gurpreet finished eighth in 51 kg weight group. In the team championship, Haryana-A boys earned 51 points to lift team championship while girls made a clean sweep winning all the eight gold medals decided in the competition thereby earned record 80 points. Second place in boys section went to Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) while Delhi-A finished third securing 38 points. Similarly, in girls section, Uttar Pradesh-A bagged second place and Punjab-A had to contain with third spot. It is pertinent to mention here that in girls’ event, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh fielded two teams each. In boys’ category, champion Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh contested with two teams each. In the finals and valedictory function, Minister for Sports, R S Chib was chief guest, who gave away championship trophies and also distributed medals among the final bouts played this evening. President Wrestling Federation of India and general secretary of hosts J&K Wrestling Association, Dushyant Sharma in his vote of thanks expressed his gratitude to those individuals and organizations for extending a helping hand in the successful conduct of the championship.
