Withdraw ‘extra-ordinary’ restrictions in Kashmir: PDP to govt
6/20/2011 10:13:57 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, June 19 (KNS): Asking the state government to withdraw extraordinary restriction imposed in view of last year’s summer unrest in the Valley, opposition Peoples Democratic Party Monday said that there was no need to continue with such measures as ‘peace had returned.’
The PDP president, Mehbooba Mufti, in a statement said the people of the state and especially of Kashmir valley had once again given peace a chance even in the face of most ‘draconian measures and provocations.’
“There was no reason for the government to continue with the extra ordinary restrictions,” she said.
Mehbooba alleged the government was apparently feeling insecure because it had failed to bring to book the culprits responsible for killings of 120 people on the streets last year.
Urging the government to immediately restore full liberty to media to function as an independent and effective part of a democratic setup, Mehbooba said the media ‘gag’ was continuing while human rights activists and writers from rest of the country were deported or prevented from entering the state.
“News from local TV channels continues to be banned. It is highly discriminatory that the local TV channels in Kashmir were being denied permission to run news and current affairs programmes while allowing it in other parts of the state,” she said.
Demanding the release of political prisoners and the youth who were arrested on charges of stone pelting, the PDP president said, “No government except the most dictatorial ones would arrest the complainants who were demanding justice for victims and the Omar Abdullah administration has earned this dubious distinction as well.
“The career of more than 5000 youth have been jeopardized by filing FIR’s against them and forcing them to show up at police stations,” she said and demanded all such cases must be withdrawn and these youth must be allowed to pursue their studies and profession without harassment.
“On the one hand the government was making noises about bringing back the youth who had gone for training across the LOC, while on the other hand they have made the life of those who live here peacefully miserable,” Mehbooba said.
