| Safai Karamcharis eligible for minimum wages, says Choudhary | | | JAMMU NOV-23 Chairperson National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Santosh Choudhary has said that the National Scheme for Rehabilitation and Liberation of Scavengers has been made applicable to Jammu and Kashmir State as a result of which funds would flow from the Central Government for the benefit of Safai Karamcharis in the State. Addressing a meeting of Safai Karmcharis working in different banks here, she said that a proviso has been inserted in Minimum Wages Act of 1936 through a Notification in November last year where under Safai Karamcharis shall be eligible for minimum wages as applicable to other workers. The chairperson suggested the need for a proper coordination between Banks and the district authorities so that awareness programs are organized. She asked the Safai Karamcharis to form their own cooperative societies and self help grounds and get finance from the banks and execute the contracts within their own supervision. She assured the Karamcharis that she would visit their dwellings and bastis to take stock of the situation. She said that it has been her endeavour to listen and understand the problems being faced y this section of the society and put forth the same before the government for making special provisions in the law.
