Articulate government positions on interstate projects clearly: Madhav Lal

SRINAGAR, JUNE 20: In order to foster close cooperation in socio-economic sectors and remove bottlenecks in cooperative development within Northern States, a high level meeting of Standing Committee of Northern Zonal Council was held here at SKICC today with Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Madhav Lal in chair.
Chief Secretaries of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, New Delhi, Chandigarh and officials from various Central Ministries participated in the meeting.
The Standing Committee after detailed deliberations and consultation identified several issues pertaining to preferential treatment to Northern States because of their locational disadvantage, interstate water and power issues, modification of crop insurance, subsidization of helicopter services in the State of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, interstate crime coordination, promotion of export of fruits, flowers and vegetables in northern States and public transport projects within National capital Region for follow up action, to be taken in Northern Zonal Council meetings later.
The Chief Secretaries highlighted various issues of their respective states requiring attention to promote common good in the interest of northern states’ people.
The Standing Committee stressed on evolving a comprehensive strategy to effectively deal with the problem of women and child trafficking, drug abuse, beggary and other crimes in the Northern States.
The Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir called for articulating clear view point depicting respective positions of state governments with regard to various interstate water and power projects. This, he said would help to evolve consensus for mutual benefit amongst the Council members.
Madhav Lal underscored the need to evolve an institutional mechanism for marketing fruits, flowers and vegetables enabling better return to the farming community and fruit growers. This system needs better coordination and efforts among the Zonal States, he added.
