Seema to sing Faiz in New York | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, June 20: An exclusive solo performance by renowned Indian singer and composer from Jammu & Kashmir Seema Anil Sehgal is the highlight of the international Urdu conference being held at Long Island, New York, from 24 to 26 June 2011. Seema is the only singer invited to perform at this prestigious conference. Centenary celebrations of famed Urdu poet from Pakistan, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, are the central theme of the conference, which, in its third edition, is sponsored by a Pakistani TV station Soundview Broadcasting and a local Urdu newspaper Urdu Times. Seema will present her selection from the vast repertoire of Faiz that she has set to music herself. It may be recalled that the first music concert dedicated to the poetry of the celebrated poet Faiz was sung by Seema Anil Sehgal, at New Delhi, in the year 1986. Seema's performance reiterates the universality of music and poetry defying all physical boundaries, nationalities and religious bigotry. It is pertinent to note that Faiz Ahmed Faiz is one of the most celebrated poets of Pakistan and this conference is a predominantly Pakistani affair, and, yet, an Indian singer of Hindu religion will do the honours of singing the choicest Urdu poems of Faiz. Indeed, poetry and music know no physical boundaries and a language has no religion. The concert shall be introduced and presented by squadron leader Anil Sehgal, author and music producer husband of the singer. The program of the conference comprises of seminars and lectures, panel discussions, Urdu book shows, a 'Shaam-e-Ghazal' featuring Seema Anil Sehgal and a mushaira featuring poets from the United States, the UK, India and Pakistan. It may be recalled that starting in her teens, Seema has been holding concerts dedicated to poets of substance like Mirza Ghalib, Mir Taqi Mir, Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Fiaz, Ali Sardar Jafri, Bulley Shah for the past about three decades. She received the Hakim Khan Sur award for establishing communal harmony and promoting national integration. This national level award has earlier been awarded to the likes of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar and Dalai Lama, among others. In 1999, Indian Prime Minister A B Vajpayee created history when he presented a music album Sarhad, sung & composed by Seema Anil Sehgal, to his erstwhile Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharief, as a national gift. The album, based on the poems of Jnanpith Award winner Ali Sardar Jafri, is dedicated to Indo-Pak amity.
