‘Hope for the best, prepare for the worst’
Options with Omar?
6/21/2011 12:29:51 AM
Early Times Report
jammu, June 20: A visibly shaken Omar has been issuing statements on a daily basis about his term as Chief Minister of the State. Notwithstanding the assurance of the Prime Minister, Omar is not sure of a full term in the office. Omar knows the important decision has to be taken by the Congress High Command and if past experiences are any indicator then Omar has every reason to feel worried. The Congress has never kept its promises from the very beginning.
Omar felt the tremors on June 13 when two very senior and influential Congress leaders Karan Singh and M L Fotedar publicly favoured rotational chief ministership. Since then the Chief Minister had been repeatedly saying that he would hold the office for six years. Even yesterday, he said contrary to common belief in Congress, he will not be making way for a Congress Chief Minister after completing three years in office.
What prompts Omar to issue such statements on a daily basis? The frequent statements only reflect his desperation. The politicians must be aware of history and history unfortunately does not favour him.
Omar can hope for the best but he has to prepare himself for the worst.
Former Chief Minsiter Mufti Muhammad Sayed's rule is considered a `golden era' in Jammu Kashmir. Unlike Omar he had the blessings of influential people in New Delhi who recommended a six year term for him. Omar on the other hand has been held liable for governance deficit and trust deficit. But when Mufti completed his three years in office, he was asked to step down.
Mufti did not issue a single statement about the term because he was confident of getting a fair deal from New Delhi.
And then Congress has other problems to address in the state. It is not generous enough to allow the party to vanish from the state for a Chief Minister who challenges the totality of accession. The majority of Congress leaders believe rotational chief ministership was the only option left on for the Congress in the state. It would be very difficult for the party high command to ignore their demand.
