Release prisoners, withdraw FIRs to create atmosphere of reconciliation: PDP to New Delhi | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 21 (KNS): Opposition Peoples Democratic Party Tuesday urged New Delhi to release political prisoners and withdraw FIRs against those involved in last year’s summer unrest in Kashmir, to create an atmosphere of reconciliation. “Home Minister (P Chidambaram) who is closely monitoring the situation here should take steps to release the persons arrested last year and withdraw cases against five to six thousand youth who took part in summer protests in 2010,” PDP President Mehbooba Mufti told reporters after a meeting of the party’s executive here. Urging New Delhi to initiate processes of conflict resolution, democratic liberalization and institutional guarantees of human rights, the PDP welcomed the latest round of talks between India and Pakistan which it hoped would substantially address the Kashmir issue alongwith other subjects. The PDP urged the Government of India to take visible action on the internal dimension of the problem ‘which can be delayed only at the risk of further miseries for the people of Jammu & Kashmir and bad name for the country.’ “PDP takes a serious view of the complete reversal of the journey of hope that the state had embarked upon in the wake of historic 2002 elections, the worst and most prominent victim of which has been the cross LOC travel and trade. Uri-Muzafferabad and Poonch-Rawlakote, road once again, look more difficult and distant than Wagah-Attari in the presence of hassles in getting travel permits or conducting trade,” the PDP President aid. She congratulated the people of the state for once again expressing their faith in democratic methods of political emancipation and economic growth through Panchayat elections. While stressing the need for urgent devolution of appropriate powers to these grass roots democratic institutions, the PDP President said, “These are not merely instruments of restricted local village development. We aim at utilizing this crucial representative space for an institutional pursuit of broader objectives of political and economic emancipation that would remain unachievable without the resolution of Kashmir issue,” Mehbooba said. The PDP President expressed serious concern at the ‘mounting governance deficit that has pushed the state into a virtual whirlpool of corruption, maladministration, unemployment and despair.’ “Development process is almost paralysed while the major initiatives taken by the previous coalition government have been almost abandoned, apparently with a sense of vengeance. The ADB funded projects under ERA are running years behind schedule with further approvals suspended, Prime Minister’s reconstruction programme is in disarray and schemes like NUURM are failing to take off,” she alleged. The PDP President accused the NC government of making sell out of state’s vital resources. “The sell out continues unabated as is evident from the latest joint venture with the NHPC on highly lopsided terms of agreement. The disengagement of J&K Bank as the state banker and shifting to RBI is a severe blow to the self respect and autonomous character of J&K. It is virtual de recognition of state’s professional capacities and reliance on RBI carries obvious strings with it,” she added.
