Varun Sahni on his way out | Demand for local VC for JU gaining momentum | | Neha jammu, June 21: Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University is on his way out. He is likely to demit office in the coming November after he completes three years term. Sources disclose that he may not get extension. For, he has not "performed well." "His tenure, like the six-year-long tenure of his predecessor Amitabh Mattoo, is one of gross mismanagement, inefficiency and all round deterioration with some sycophants ruling the roost and reducing the premier educational institution of higher learning to a den of intrigues," reveal these sources. Sources also reveal that "Sahni doesn't have good relations with those who matter in the administration and this lack of rapport with the higher authorities has led to a sort of financial crisis with the university authorities not really able to meet the financial needs." "Faculty members are unhappy because the Vice-Chancellor has utterly failed to meet their demands, including payment of arrears. Students are unhappy because there is no academic calendar, as also because corrupt elements have established their stranglehold over the sensitive and crucial examination section," some faculty members and students revealed this on the condition of anonymity. Their main allegation was that "Varun Sahni has never ever taken interest in the university affairs ever since he took over as Vice-Chancellor" and that "his min concern was to safeguard the interests of Mattoo, who had committed several financial irregularities, and his coterie consisting of half a dozen teachers and administrators and that's all." Another grouse of theirs' was that "Sahni is arrogant and inaccessible." The interaction with the faculty members and students also indicated their desire for having a local Vice-Chancellor after Varun Sahni demits office. Their arguments were: the "outsiders have no interest in the development of education"; "they simply use the Jammu University as a launching pad"; "they only indulge in politicking to secure their own position"; "they take recourse to the policy of divide and rule, enjoy all facilities and perks"; and "they create only a mess as they are not aware of the local needs and requirements." The major refrain of theirs' was that "only a local Vice-Chancellor can meet the needs of the Jammu province as they are sons of the soil." The fact of the matter is that the appointment of a Dogra academic as Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University is gaining momentum. However, it will be seen if a Dogra academic would be able to become Vice-Chancellor. He/she needs official support and patronage. It is extremely doubtful if he/she would get the official support. The failure of the Dogras to get a local Vice-Chancellor for the sanctioned Jammu Central University is an indication that the Dogras, unlike the people of Kashmir, have no support-base either in the state or in New Delhi. Even the local leadership is weak. It is interested only in petty politics and not in what the Dogras long for. |
