Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee-a legend
BALBIR RAM-6/22/2011 8:59:30 PM
Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was born on July 6, 1901 in Calcutta. His father Ashutosh Mukherjee was an eminent educationist and the first Indian Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. Dr. Mookerjee earned his graduation degree in English in the year 1921 from the University of Calcutta and masters from the same institution in 1923. The same year, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee became a member of the Senate of the University of Calcutta and started studying in law. He earned the BL degree in 1924 and subsequently became an advocate in the Calcutta High Court after the death of his father. After practicing in the Calcutta High Court for two years, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee left for England in the year 1926 for further studies in law at the Lincoln's Inn. He became a barrister in the year 1927 and returned to Calcutta. In the year 1934 when Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was only 33 years of age, he assumed office as the Vice Chancellor of University of Calcutta, becoming the youngest person in the history of the University to do so. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee remained in office till 1938.
Shyama Prasad Mookerjee entered into active politics after the end of his term as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. He joined the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Legislative Council of Bengal. However, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee resigned from the legislative council after only a year in office in support of Congress' decision to boycott the legislature. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee decided to contest elections as an independent candidate after his resignation. He won the elections and assumed office as the Finance Minister of the Bengal province for the term 1941-1942. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee protested against the communalist and separatist ideas propagated by Muslim League leader Mohammad Ali Jinnah. Jinnah wanted a separate Muslim state, a condition that Shyama Prasad Mookerjee decided to resist.
After August 1947, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was made a part of the Jawaharlal Nehru cabinet and given the office of the minister for industry and supply. Having worked with the Indian National Congress before, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was a favourite of many eminent leaders of the party. But differences between him and Jawaharlal Nehru forced the former to resign from his position in the government on April 6, 1950.
Shyama Prasad Mookerjee formed the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) on October 21, 1951 after his separation with Jawaharlal Nehru. The BJS stood for free market economies as opposed to the socialist economic policies propounded by Jawaharlal Nehru. However, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee did not believe in discriminating the Muslims, and as such, he practiced the same civil code for both the Hindus and the Muslims. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee repeatedly spoke out against the ritual of cow slaughter and special favours given to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. There was a rule during that point of time which prevented any Indian citizen from entering Jammu and Kashmir without the permission from the state authorities.Protesting against the rule applicable in Jammu and Kashmir, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee declared to enter the state without obtaining permit from the state's authorities. With the slogan of Ek Vidhaan-Ek Nishaan-Ek Pradhaan, he entered the state from Punjab borders on May 11, 1953 but was arrested and taken to Srinagar from Madhopur bridge. He died while he was under arrest under mysterious circumstances at Srinagar on June 23, 1953. This great Indian got martyrdom for the cause of the nation and his mission of getting abolished the provision of seperate flag and separate constitution still remains to be achieved, although the post of Prime Minster was abolished after his supreme sacrifice.
Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was and shall remained one of the chief political figures of India. A number of memorials and buildings stand constructed and named in his memory. A junction located at the intersection of Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum and the Regal Cinema in Mumbai has been named after Shyama Prasad Mookerjee; Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation dedicated a bridge to Shyama Prasad Mookerjee on August 27, 1998; CSIR in India announced fellowships named after Shyama Prasad Mookerjee in 2001 for deserving candidates who want to pursue the Ph D degree; the tallest building in Delhi, which houses offices of several branches of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was named the ‘Doctor Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Civic Centre, are a few to count.
Dr. Mokerjee stands as the tallest leader of India. His whole life is an institution in itself and the young generation should take inspiration from his life to become the true patriotic Indians.
