| In PMGSY, contractors’ row, Shangus people suffer | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, June 22 (KNS): A complete strike was observed in Shangus constituency of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday against the dilapidated condition of roads in the area. People in the area are protesting against what they call government ‘apathy’ towards the condition of Achabal-Shangus-Chatergul-Chatapal road, which is in shambles. The upgradation work of the road was taken up under Prime Minister’s Grameen Sadak Yojna in 2009. Sources told KNS that the work was stopped in 2010 due to dispute arising between the PMGSY authorities and the contractors. The PMGSY authorities maintain that the contractors weren’t able to execute the work within the stipulated time and only 11 percent work was completed in 14 months out of the allotted 18 months. The PMGSY authorities canceled the work orders to the contractors last year. Aggrieved, over the decision, the contractors moved to the court against the decision. The MLA Shangus, Peer Mansoor Hussain told KNS that the case is still pending in the court and no work on the road has been carried out since last year. “In the name of road widening, whole road was dug. More than one lakh people living in the area are suffering. I took up the issue twice with the Chief Minister (Omar Abdullah). The Minister of State for R&B Javed Dar also visited the area twice. He told me if the case isn’t settled in court soon, they will handover the work to R&B department for execution so that people will not suffer. However, nothing has been done so ffar,” he added. Mansoor warned that people of the area will be forced to protest outside Civil Secretariat here if their demand isn’t met within 15 days.
