6/23/2011 9:50:05 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, June 23 (KNS): State Secretary of CPI-M and MLA Kulgam, M Y Tarigami, Thursday reiterated his demand for bringing the new families that have come up after 2001 census under the ambit of public distribution system to tide over ration shortage in Kandi areas across the State.
Winding up his two-day tour of rural areas of Anantnag district, the legislator observed that ration supply and its distribution is not commensurate with present population figures, which he said has led to a grave crisis especially in Kandi belts. “The problem is too serious to be ignored for long,” he said adding that continuous administrative apathy towards this crucial public issue has lead to deprivation of thousands of people across the State.
He also expressed dismay over non-starting of works under MGNREGA this fiscal, saying that delayed execution of the central flagship programme mars the livelihood prospects of poor laborers and peasants. “The inordinate delay in the launch of NREGA works complicates the problems of laborers and BPL populace, who derive sustenance alongside helping in building rural assets under the programme”, he said.
The demand driven NREGA calls for timely execution as it is essentially designed to generate employment for the poor to provide them wage security, adding that delaying its implementation amounts to hitting the belly of poor laborers and peasants. He demanded freeing the scheme out of bureaucratic wrangles in the interest of the poor who have no resources to bank upon in the present era of high price escalation.
Tarigami also called for upgrading road communication network with thrust on rebuilding and upgrading dilapidated roads in District Anantnag. He said rural roads paint a grim picture everywhere and stressed the need to pace up PMGSY projects to improve road network scenario in the State.
