Govt. mulls auditing of doctors’ prescriptions
Sham reviews yatra arrangements

Pahalgam/Chandanwari, June 23 - Minister for Health & Family Welfare Mr. Sham Lal Sharma today visited Pahalgam and Chandanwari to take stock of Shri Amarnath Yatra arrangements.
Chairing a meeting of the officers at Pahalgam, the Minister directed the Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag (Yatra Officer) to ensure adequate stocking of essentials like food grain, cooking gas cylinders, kerosene oil, fire wood at Chandanwari and yatra base camp Pahalgam well before the start of yatra. He stressed on the close coordination between various departments, SASB and security agencies to ensure smooth conduct of yatra, as also to meet eventuality, if any.
The Minister issued specific instructions to Director Health Services, Kashmir to ensure adequate supply of essential medicines, portable oxygen cylinders and ambulances at Pahalgam and Chandanwari for the facilities of the pilgrims. He directed Chief Medical Officer, Anantnag to personally monitor the health facilities at these two places and at vital points en-route to shrine. He also suggested taking services of some volunteer organizations/NGOs for facilitating the pilgrims during yatra period.
Mr. Sham stressed on ensuring sanitation, uninterrupted power, drinking water supply at the base camp and Chandanwari. He also called for conservation of environment en-route, adding that adequate number of public utilities points be made available to the pilgrims at different locations. He directed the Controller, Drugs & Food Control Organization to deploy a team of food inspectors at Pahalgam to ensure hygienic food items to the pilgrims and general public. They would conduct regular checking of Dhabas, Langers and other food establishments and ensure quality food in the town, the Minister asserted.
Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, Syed Kifayat Rizvi informed that administration has been fully geared up and most of the yatra arrangements have already been finalized. He assured that everything, required for yatra will be in place at least three days before the commencement of yatra.
Director, Indian System of Medicines (ISM), Dr. Abdul Kabir Dar, Director Health Services, Kashmir Dr. Saleem-ur-Rehman, Director Floriculture, Dr. G.N.Naqash and all district officers were present in the meeting.
Meanwhile, the Minister also paid surprise visit to various health institutions en-route and took stock of the medicare facilities available there. The institutions which were inspected included, primary health centres, Srigufwara, Sallar, Khonmoh, district hospital, Anantnag and sub-district hospital, Seer Hamdan.
On finding absent from duty, the Minister directed transfer of Dr. Mohammad Shafi, Dental Surgeon from Khonmoh to Gurez. He also ordered serving termination notice to Dr. Suzana, ISM (NRHM) for prescribing allopathic medicines to the patients. One Dawasaz (NRHM) Mubarik Ahmed of PHC, Khonmoh was also removed for violating the dress code.
Dr. Mudasir, Assistant Surgeon (NRHM) of PHC, Sallar was also served termination notice for his poor performance. He issued stern warning to all the doctors and para-medics to work with zeal and dedication and observe medical ethics strictly. The dereliction of duty will not be tolerated at any cost and poor performers will face severe action, the Minister asserted.
The Minister specially directed the head of the institutions to make everyone accountable and improve the functioning of their institutions. He said government will shortly start auditing of prescriptions of the doctors to discourage the practice of writing unnecessary medicines and so-called tonics, which are actually not required by the patients. He said complaints are pouring from the general public regarding nexus between the doctors and medical representatives for promoting their drugs and tonics and minting money from the poor patients. He directed the Controller Drugs & Food Control Organization to conduct frequent surprise checks on the chemists’ shops and ensure stoppage sale of such spurious and poor quality drugs in the market.
