President displeased over changing names of Kashmir villages
6/23/2011 9:55:22 PM
Early Times REPORT
Jammu, June 23: President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil expressed her displeasure and astonishment over the reports of changing of ancient and historical names of some Kasmiri villages, religious places, hillocks, mountains etc.
She expressed her total disagreement with the moves of rechristening Srinagar as Shahar-e- Khas.
She expressed these views to a five member delegation of Kashmira Vahini , the women wing ofPanun Kashmir which called on her this morning.
She keenly sought more details about the issue and assured the delegation of taking up the matter with the appropriate authorities including the Governor of the state.
Khema Kaul, National spokesperson of Kashmira Vahini presented to the President, a framed portrait of goddess Kashmira Devi, which the President appreciated.
Kalyani Kaul, Kashmira Vahini’s Delhi coordinator presented the memorandum to the President.
The President was kind enough to give a patient hearing to the delegation and keenly perused the memorandum.
Khema Kaul , while highlighting the issues faced by the displaced Kashmiri Pandits in general and the women in particular , made a strong case for seeking the President’s intervention in raising the amount of meager relief being paid to registered displaced families.
On behalf of Kashmira Vahini, she wished for the immediate revision of the relief amount and requested the intermittent revision to be linked with the whole sale price index.
In the light of the spiraling prices of essential commodities like gas, fuel, transport, food items etc and then the pressure of the authorities for charging enhanced electricity cost from these families at Jagti Township while survival on a paltry Rs.5000 per month per family was impossible.
It also demanded setting up of a Sharda script protection foundation which would not only be a repository of all available Sharda manuscripts but would also promote its preservation and usage.
The President also shared her concern with the delegation regarding the need for passage of The Shrines and Temples (protection) bill in the state and assured her intervention in this regard.
The meeting concluded with the delegation highlighting the need and the importance of a separate geo- political space for the displaced community in Kashmir which would save them from extinction.
The President assured Khema Kaul that she would in the very near future be informed about the action taken by the Rashtrapati Bhawan office.
