Workshop on Digital Library inaugurated at MANUU

HYDERABAD, June 23: There is a flood of information in the institutions like Universities. If not gathered or stored systematically, it may create problems. Sometimes it is difficult to even to point out that how many newsletters are being published from different sections of the organization. Obviously to upload them on internet is also a task.
New and upcoming institutions like Maulana Azad National Urdu University shall properly plan to store the information in the form of Documentary, Audio & Video and upload them. This will be helpful in future.
Professor Shabahat Husain (Librarian, Aligarh Muslim University) express these views today at MANUU. He was addressing as chief guest in the inaugural session of 4-day national workshop being organized by Central Library, MANUU at Library Auditorium. Professor Khalid Saeed presided over.
According to Professor Shabahat Husain there are many softwares available to systematically store and gather the material. Space is one prominent software among them, which could be useful and fruitful. Apart from this MANUU can avail the services of institutional depository from other Universities.
He divided Open Access through internet into two categories. One is Open Access Publishing and the other is Open Access Archiving. He also stressed the need of preparing bibliography. Huge amount of informative material is available on internet, which can be translated in to any language. For this purpose software and translation websites are available.
Prof. Khalid Saeed in his presidential remarks said that, he will forward a proposal to Vice-Chancellor, MANUU, Prof. Mohammad Miyan, in the light of Prof. Shabahat Husain’s advice. So, that different centres of MANUU could form a committee to gather related information and recommend its translation. University’s centre for Urdu Language, Literature and Culture has written letters to different libraries asking them to provide digital information. University is trying to convince these libraries to provide their digital material also. Khuda Baksh Oriental Library, Patna has agreed to co-oprate.
Earlier Prof. Amina Kishore, Dean School of Language, Linguistics & Indology & Director I/c Central Library, presented MANUU’s profile. Urdu University is focusing on the areas of higher education through Urdu Medium & Women Education, she said. MANUU’s Directorate of Distance Education is striving hard to make this unique University accessible in every nook & corner of the country. Dr. B. Ravi Kumar, University of Hyderabad, spoke on theme of the workshop. DSpace is also in use in foreign countries apart from India, he said. Dr. Abbas Khan, Librarian I/c, MANUU Central Library & Organizing Secretary of Workshop welcomed the gathering, introduced the guests, conducted proceedings and proposed vote of thanks. Thai students from Osmania University and library professionals from Hyderabad, Delhi, Patna are participating.
