BJP remembers Shyama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary
6/23/2011 11:33:41 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, June 23: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday paid floral tributes to Shyama Prasad Mookerjee on his 58th “Balidaan Divas”. The party organised number of programmes at districts level in memory of Mookerjee. The portrait of Mookerjee was garlanded and floral
tributes paid by party leaders.
The BJP state president Shamsher Singh Manhas while paying tributes to Mookerjee in a programme organised at Hiranagar said that he “sacrificed” his life for the cause of nation in the state. “After independent, while any citizen could visit any part of the country without any restriction, the Jammu and Kashmir state had a permit system. Any one willing to visit this border state had to obtain a permit from the administration. Mookerjee launched an
agitation against this system and declared to enter J&K without permit. In 1953, he, along with other leaders, entered the state and was arrested,” he maintained.
Manhas recalled that Mookerjee died under mysterious circumstances at Srinagar after few days of his arrest. “Although the post of Prime Minister was abolished but still the mission is incomplete as the state has separate flag and separate constitution,” he said.
He also expressed concern over alleged attempt on part of the government at the centre and in the state to grant concession to appease separatists through the recommendations of Sagheer Ahmed and the Interlocutors.
He also condemned the attitude of the US embassy in refusing Visa to party spokesperson Jitendra Singh on some “fabricated grounds”. A similar programme was organised by Jammu district BJP under its president Rajesh Gupta at Kamla Palace, Jammu. Veteran leader of the party Daya Krishan Kotwal, while paying tributes, described Mookerjee as “brave, intelligent and true
patriotic Indian”. BJP chief spokesperson Jitendra Singh said that Mookerjee would always
be remembered for his vision and foresight.
He said that it was Mookerjee who had suggested to the then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru that Article 370 should be made time bound but Nehru did not agree to it. State General Secretary Sat Sharma also narrated sequence of events in the life of Mookerjee and said that it should serve to be a source of inspiration for the party workers. President Rajesh Gupta and other senior leaders of the party also paid tributes to the departed soul.
