Young men finish first'

Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 23: National Conference has stood in the just concluded Panchayat elections first under the `dynamic' leadership of the youngest and the best Chief Minister of all times. This means younger people can deliver notwithstanding the famous Persian adage Tifle shawad khaandaar, khane shawad vairaan (a young care taker spoils the family).
While Omar Abdullah has a `reason' to celebrate for his `achievements', the stage seems all set for his friend to take over the reins of the country. After all he too is young, dynamic and popular and the country is expected to make a mark during his rule.
It has been observed that young men who hold important positions have strained relations with the press. The country, therefore, has to get ready for a ban on news channels and newspapers if Omar's friend takes over. Young people get angry in a jiffy and in are susceptible to criticism even if it is genuine.
Such authoritarian people get angry to the extent of sacrificing a senior colleague who dares to talk sense. Burq girti hai to becharay akhbaar waloon par (lightening strikes the scribe). The adage stands proved when a printing press is sealed at midnight and when employees of news houses are arrested.
The newspaper industry which is already on the death bed may be strangled in case the owners and editors do not toe to the line drawn by people in authority especially when they happen to be young. In this part of the world, newspapers mostly survive on government advertisements. This is something which the authorities (mis) use to tame the newspapers. The irony is that no reason or formal order is issued to justify such un-democratic actions.
Fortunately there are some newspapers that do not `survive on government advertisements' and take a stand to protect and safeguard the democratic norms. But such rare exceptions are always an eye sore for the authorities.
