CU of Kashmir allotted land, Jammu again ignored | | | Neha JAMMU, June 24: CM Omar Abdullah and his Cabinet colleagues have done well to allot and transfer the required land to the Kashmir Central University. It would have still better had they allotted and transferred the required land to the said university much earlier. Such an action would have gone a long way in making the said university fully functional in a sound and congenial environment. Anyway, the decision has been finally taken and it should be welcomed by one and all. However, this action of the authorities in the state is bound to raise eyebrows in Jammu where the people have been agitating since months in order to make the authorities establish the sanctioned Central University in Jammu. During the past 15 months or so, a number of Jammu-based social, cultural and political groups as well several student organizations have organized protest demonstrations demanding the establishment of the university headed by a local academician. They even organized a very successful bandh last year. But all these efforts have gone down the drain. It would have been better had the state cabinet also adopted a resolution asking the concerned authorities in New Delhi, particularly the Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal, to establish forthwith the sanctioned university in Jammu. It should have told the authorities in New Delhi that the delay in the establishment of the CU of Jammu is embittering further the already bitter relations between the two regions, Kashmir and Jammu, and that the establishment of the CU in Jammu would go a long way in meeting their genuine demands and creating a sense of belonging in Jammu. That the state cabinet allotted and transferred land to the Kashmir Central University and did not say anything about the Jammu Central University simply vindicates those who have been accusing the state government of adopting discriminatory policies towards the people of Jammu province. However, what would annoy the people of Jammu more would be the indifferent attitude of the Jammu-based ministers to the demand in Jammu for the establishment of the Central University. The indifferent attitude on the part of the Jammu-based ministers belonging to the Congress and the NC is not in their interest. The people of Jammu want them to assert their position and come up to their expectation by taking up the issues they hold very dear. Hence, it is time for them to act and prove that they are equally concerned with the constituencies they represent.
