| OIC terms Indian J&K as Indian-occupied-Kashmir Rustam | | | JAMMU, June 24: Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), a conglomerate of 57 Muslim countries, has described the Indian Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) as a region that has been occupied by India. It may be mentioned that in an invite to AHPC chairman Mirwaiz Omar Farooq, the OIC has referred J&K as an “occupied” territory. The invite was sent by OIC secretary general Ekmeleddin Thsanogly inviting Mirwaiz to attend a summit meeting of the OIC Kazakhstan. The invite was sent from Jeddah.
The invite has created a sort of furore in the country. Reacting to the description of J&K as an “occupied” region, the Indian Foreign Office has said: “We have seen reports that OIC has again chosen to refer to J&K incorrectly, in an invitation to an Indian invitee to an OIC meeting. This is most regrettable. The State of J&K is an integral part of India. We totally reject any reference or description to the contrary.”
The JKPCC president, Saif-ud-Din Soz, has described the description of J&K as “occupied” region as
unacceptable” and urged Mirwaiz to reconsider his decision to attend the proposed OIC meeting. Union Minister for Minority Affairs Salman Khrsheed has expressed almost identical views and stated that the Indian Foreign Office would take an appropriate view on the whole issue. Congress national spokesperson Jayanthi Natrajan, too, has expressed similar views and asserted that “J&K is an integral part of India and it would remain so.” Interlocutor for J&K Radha Kumar has described the description as uncalled for and expressed the view that such actions have the potential of derailing the ongoing peace process between Indian and Pakistan. She has, in addition, said: The need of the time is to strengthen the peace process and not create hurdles.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also given his reaction in response to a question put by the Times Now correspondent. He has virtually said: “I don’t have any problem with such a description. My problem is that why don’t the OIC call the other side (Pakistan-occupied-J&K and Gilgit-Baltistan) as Pakistan-occupied areas.” It is hardly necessary to reflect on what the Chief Minister has said on the issue as the meaning and implications of each and every word that he spoke are loud and clear. The separatists like Sajjad Lone have expressed the view that “we should not attach too much importance” to such a description and have urged India show to “magnanimity” and allow Mirwaiz to travel to Kazakhstan so that he could attend the OIC meet.
However, it is the chairman of the Panthers Party, Bhim Singh, who has been more severe than anyone else in his criticism. It would be only appropriate to reproduce here what he said. He has said: “OIC group of Islamic Countries (should) sweep their own windows and doors to clear off the authoritarian rule unleashed by Sheikhdoms, Sultanates and Kingdoms with the stone-age rules and dictates lest their own people show them the roadmap of democracy and rule of law of which their own citizens have remained deprived (of) in all those 57 member countries of OIC…(The description is a) violation of UN Charter and challenges Indian sovereignty... Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should take immediate step to disassociate from all the activities of OIC once for all…Any country which challenges the sovereignty of India vis-à-vis any part of the country should be (excluded) from the list of the countries entitled to diplomatic immunity in India…The Congress has messed up things…I left the Congress Party in 1982 because the party leadership had no will or policy vis-à-vis J&K. Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram backed J&K Chief Minister who had on October 7, 2010 declared inside the State Assembly that J&K was not integral part of India. This is the doubtful policy of the Union Government which has encouraged terrorism inside J&K and encouraged the enemies of the nation outside. National Conference has been and is the mother of militancy, lawlessness, corruption and the Central Congress and BJP leadership has been patronizing the National Conference.”
Bhim Singh has, in addition said: “I acceded to India in 1947. 90 per cent of the people in the state are with India. Mirwaiz is more Indian than I am. The Congress is responsible for all the confusion as far as J&K is concerned. No one would allowed to compromise the Indian position in the state.” (To be continued) |
