| BJP,SS stage walkout in Rajya Sabha | | |
NEW DELHI, NOV 24 BJP and Shiv Sena members today staged a walkout in Rajya Sabha protesting treasury benches' strong opposition to a private member's bill seeking removal of Article 370 which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir. As soon as senior Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi sought leave of the House to introduce the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, Congress members were on their feet opposing its introduction. That sparked a debate with BJP and Shiv Sena members claiming the bill could not be stopped from being introduced. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachouri said a similar bill had been rejected at the introduction stage in 1993 also. The opposition members walked to the well shouting slogans. With impasse continuing, the Chair called for a voice vote to decide the fate of the bill.
As voice vote went against it, the protest by BJP and Shiv Sena became more loud prompting the Chair to call for a division.
The Opposition, however, did not wait for the vote and walked out.
Jai Prakash Agarwal of Congress moved two private bills for welfare of street vendors and destitute women.
Mahendra Mohan of Samajwadi Party moved a bill to regulate clinical trials of drugs and making provisions of compulsory medical care for accident victims.
