| Rural Employment Act to be extended to Jammu Kashmir | | |
New Delhi NOv 24
The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal for amendment in National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 so as to make it applicable to the State of Jammu & Kashmir by deleting the words ‘except the State of Jammu & Kashmir’ from Section 1(2) of the Act. The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA),2005 notified by the Indian Government on 7th September, 2005 provides for a legal guarantee for 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household seeking unskilled manual work. In terms of Section 1(2) of the Act, NREGA is not applicable to the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Section 1(2) of the Act reads as: ‘It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu & Kashmir”.
Government of Jammu and Kashmir, however, is keen to implement the NREG Act in the State and a proposal was sent by the State Government to Ministry of home Affairs to extend the Act to the State.
