Every 6th youth in Kashmir is a drug addict: Survey

Jammu, June 25: National Students Union of India (NSUI) J & K, a frontal wing of the Congress party have decided to launch a state wide programme to eradicate the menace of drug addiction especially in Kashmir valley, as the rate of addiction is very high in both the rural and urban areas of Kashmir.
Interacting with media persons, Abdul Rashid Choudhary State President NSUI revealed that that the programme consists of three stages i.e. the survey, awareness campaigns and eradication and rehabilitation.
He said that the preliminary survey has been conducted in the five districts of Kashmir namely Srinagar, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Anantanag and Shaopian. The survey was carried out by a team of NSUI activists from the valley April-May.
The preliminary survey shows shocking revelations that every 4th youth in Kashmir is into the some kind of addiction and every 6th youth in Kashmir is a drug addict. The ratio of addiction among the youth of urban and rural areas is almost same. Srinagar is the worst affected district and here the density of drug addicts and traders is very high. Rashid Choudhary further stated that the survey revealed the role of some unknown and untraceable agencies in popularizing and flourishing the unholy trade of drug addiction in the valley.
He said that survey reports revealed that even female students and youth are being provided drugs in some urban localities. He said that role of government agencies in curbing this menace of drug mafia has been very poor and it seems that everything is happening under their nose.
Rashid urged the Chief Minister and civil society to pay a special attention for eradication of menace of drug addiction from the valley.
Choudhary also urged the Chief Minister and Government of India to vacate all the premises of educational institution occupied by the various government agencies including paramilitary forces in the valley. He revealed that the premises of more than a dozen premier educational institutions, meant for student’s use are under the occupation of these agencies.
Rashid informed the audience that recently, during a meeting with Home Minister of India, P. Chidambram, he has taken up the matter of vacation of premises of educational intuition at the earliest and urged him for launching of special programme for the eradication of menace of drug addiction. The Home Minister assured him of full cooperation and possible solutions.
He said that very soon NSUI activists would call on the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah to seek his attention in the above stated matters. He appealed the students and youth of Kashmir to join NSUI in numbers to bring the desired change in the system of the state and country.
Nisar Ahmed Khan senior Youth Congress leader, Aijaz Mehar state Vice President NSUI, Fayaz Ahmed Mir, State General Secretary NSUI, Touseef Raina state executive member, Adil Kapra, Mohd Ashraf Dar senior NSUI leaders also addressed the media.
