6 youth detained in Pattanover ‘stone pelting’ charges
6/26/2011 10:03:44 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, June 26 (KNS):At least six youth were arrested in overnight raids by police triggering off protests in Baramulla district of north Kashmir Sunday.
Reports said a police team assisted by para-military Central Reserve Police force (CRPF) troopers last night carried out series of raids in various localities of Pattan and detained at least six youth on the charges of stone pelting.
All the youth were whisked to the nearby Pattan police station.
Early this morning, reports said, amid a complete shutdown against the arrests, scores of people, including the relatives and friends of the detained youth took to streets and staged peaceful demonstrations. Chanting slogans, the protesters staged a sit-in near the Police Station Pattan on the Srinagar-Baramulla National highway demanding the immediate release of the youth.
The dharna affected the smooth flow of traffic on the otherwise busy highway of the north Kashmir.
The protesters dispersed peacefully after the officials assured to review the cases of the arrested youth.
Station House Officer Pattan, Rahul Malik said that all the six youth were stone pelters and were reviving stone pelting on the pattern of 2010 unrest.
“The stone pelters wanted to create 2010 like situation. They had planned to start stone pelting for 3 hours between 9-11 pm every day,” he said.
“They wanted to start the stone pelting in the area so that it spreads to other parts of the Valley as well. The aim of these stone pelters was high,” he added.
Malik also refuted the reports of protests in the area. He said the area was totally calm, after the arrests.
