J&K to hold local body elections soon | | | Early Times Report MAJALTA, Jun 26: Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to hold elections to municipal committees, councils and two corporations during the current year but not before realigning the committees afresh.
Official sources said that the government plans to raise the number of municipal committees from 68 to 90 and in this connection, Deputy Commissioners in all the districts of the two regions have been asked to identify towns in their districts which could be given the status of municipal committees.
Source said that after the completion of incident free Panchayat elections, which witnessed heavy voter turn out, state government is likely to wait for Amarnath yatra to conclude so that dates for elections to municipal committees, councils and corporations are finalized.
They added that government wants to hold civic body elections on non-party basis, something which is being opposed by the opposition. In this case, they referred to Omar Abdullah’s statement in which he had stated that National Conference had won the Panchayat elections convincingly followed by PDP and Congress.
Reports also indicate that separatists may not give election boycott call since they have been unable to influence voter turnout during the recently concluded Panchayat elections. Intelligence agency reports say that poor polling during the elections to civic bodies may be witnessed in Srinagar city and some major towns of Kashmir valley as had happened during Assembly elections in 2002 and 2008.
These reports said that overall percentage of polling may range between 55 and 65 in the entire state. Sources said that as was the case during Panchayat elections, elections to the civic bodies may be held in phases but it would be a 16-phase exercise. At the most, civic elections may be finished in six to eight phases
