EARLY TIMES REPORT KANGAN, June 26: A LPG-filled tanker overturned in the middle of the road at Margund near here today and any gas leakage from it could have endangered the lives of the people but a timely action by locals, disaster management team, police and civil officials averted a possible tragedy. After the tanker (JK02X/1525) overturned, its driver abd conductor fled the scene, fearing a possible gas explosion. A disaster management team, which happened to pass from there, immediately alerted PCR, fire services department, IOC, civil defence control room and SSP, traffic.The team was led by disaster management, Kashmir, coordinator Amir Ali and included civil defence volunteers. Within no time, all, including Ganderbal SSP, reached there and launched the operation to remove the tanker to safer place with the help of volunteers of other agencies. A large number of locals, including sarpanch of Gund-A, Haji Ghulam Qadir, also joined police. Fire tenders were kept ready to meet any eventuality. The volunteers did not care for their own safety and the operation was accomplished safely. The exemplary local participation in the operation was highly appreciated by divisional commissioner, Kashmir, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon who also announced cash reward for the rescuers, including the Sarpanch and the crane driver. Additional DGP, civil defence, home guards and auxiliary police, Ram Lubhaya also announced reward for the civil defence volunteers, who participated in the operation. Those who were recommended for reward included Amir Ali, Haji Ghulam Qadir, civil defence warden Imtiyaz Ahmed Bhat, crane driver Abdul Gafar Dar, crane conductor Fayaz Ahmed, cop Bilal Hussain, cop Mohammed Illiyas, Headconstable Mohammed Rafiq, cop Abdul Majid, cop Mushtaq Ahmed, SGC Abdul Hamid, motor garages driver Abdul Rasheed, and firemen -- Mohammed Sadiq, Abdul Samad, Musa Khan, Abdul Qayoom and Abdul Rasheed.
