| Gujjars seek food-security for nomads | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR June 26: The Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation -a main organisation of tribes today pleaded to formulate a sustainable poverty eradication programme for migratory communities of State and seeked help from National bodies against absolute poverty among nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals.
The organization in a communication sent to Centre and State government urged that the nomad Gujjars in J&K deserve special attention as they are facing extreme adversities due to toughest lifestyle, lack economic freedom and food in-security -owing to low-income and deficiency of resources.
Giving details of the letter Javaid Rahi Secretary Tribal Foundation said, “We have sent a letter to Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas and another copy sent to J&K Government with an appeal that the nomadic groups in State are facing brunt of absolute poverty. Since last few decades the tribal economy of J&K faced major shake due to rapid development and impact of globalization
The letter further reads that the nomadic groups mainly Gujjars-Bakerwals lack of basic human needs, such as clean and fresh water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter, because of the inability to afford them.
The Foundation pleaded for an exclusive National plan to eliminate illiteracy among nomad Gujjars mainly Dhodhi and Bakerwals which is the basic reason of their backwardness.
Quoting letter \Javaid Rahi Secretary Tribal Foundation stated that a recent study conducted by the foundation revealed that more than 76% of total population of nomadic Gujjars-Bakerwals are facing economic instability , food insecurity ,acute shortage of basic facilities, absolute illiteracy and lack of health facilities.
The Foundation in a separate appeal to community stressed the need to unite the diverse tribal and nomadic communities from across the state to gain a voice in Delhi, as a starting point to controlling their own destinies – and their land, water and forests.
