Manto’s play ‘Jebkatra’ staged in Natrang’s Sunday theatre series.

Jammu, June 26: ‘Jebkatra’ a play written by Sadat Hassan Manto and directed by Neeraj Kant was today staged here at Natrang Studio Theatre, Jammu in its weekly theatre series ‘Sunday Theatre’ under the direction of Neeraj Kant.
The play touches very subtle yet powerful human emotions which guide our actions. In the play Jebkatra, ‘Kashi’ who is a pick pocketer shows his talent on the bag of ‘Bimla’ but he finds some letters in it also along with the money.
The letters reflect that she is living a very sad life which she is going to finish. On seeing this, Kashi deeply feels regret for his action and decides to help her. He finds her and apologizes and also convinced her not to commit suicide as he will helped her living a good life.
In return she also promises that she will make him a good human. She tries her level best to make him feel morality, ethics, compassion and other higher emotions which he understands but could not apply as he has no control over his actions.
After doing his job for so many years, he has become kleptomaniac. He steals even if he doesn’t want to. This hurts Bimla who thinks all her efforts have gone to drain. One day ‘Pandit’ a villain character of her past enters her life to blackmail her over some issue; he has few letters with him written by her which can ruin her life.
In the return of those, he demands a hefty amount which she can not afford. She wants to take help of Kashi in stealing those letters for her as he can do it easily. But she was shocked when approached him, Kashi wants to improve but his fingers were not in his control. So in order to stand true in Bimla’s eyes, he had cut his fingers. A gush of emotions runs in the veins when such a transformation of a pick pocketer was presented.
Rohit Verma as ‘Kashi’ lived the journey of the emotions with professional ease. Niharika Sharma could also showcase the pathos required for her character. They were equally supported by Rahul Singh, Mohd Yaseen, Sakshi Prakash, Vinay Manhas, Sachin Saini, Master Manik, Smily Katoch, and Vaishali Verma. Mohit Sharma scored the music and lights were done by Neeraj Kant. The show was coordinated by Sumeet Sharma.
