Sports health elixir for youth: Omar

SRINAGAR, JUNE 27 – Stating that sound body possesses sound mind, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Monday said that sports serve as health elixir for youth and nurture them both physically and mentally.
Giving away prizes to the participants at the closing ceremony of CRPF Cup Football Tournament at Bakshi Stadium here this evening, the Chief Minister said that his Government is paying due attention to develop sports and sports persons in the State.
“A holistic programme of construction of sports stadia and play fields all across the State has already on to give considerable fillip to the sports activities”, he said adding that development of sports at district level is also receiving equal attention.
The Chief Minister said that the sports persons in Jammu and Kashmir are talented enough to compete at National level and prove their mettle. “They require proper training, encouragement and facilities for which State Government is extending every support to various Sports Associations in the State to move ahead and create sports culture in the State”, he added.
Omar said that football has remained popular game in the State producing players of national and international fame. He underlined the need for its further development and expansion. “We have high class talent available in this sport. They require nurturing and training to bring laurels to the State and the Country”, he said.
The Chief Minister said that involvement of youth in education, sports and the activities in skill development is the need of the hour to produce best possible human resources.
The Chief Minister gave away special awards to the reputed referees and players of the State with national and international fame.
As many as 24 local football teams participated in the tournament organized by CRPF, Srinagar Unit in collaboration with J&K Football Association. The tournament started on June 7, 2011 and culminated today when Jehlum Sports, Noorbagh trounced Tyndle Bisco School by a solitary goal in the final of the tournament witnessed by a large crowd.
The Chief Minister was received by Special Director General, CRPF, Anirudh Uppal, IG CRFP, Ravi Prakash while Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani, Political Advisor to the Chief Minister, Devender Singh Rana, Director General Police, Kuldeep Khoda, ADGP, Law and Order, K. Rajendra and other officers from CRPF, BSF, J&K Police and Civil Administration were present on the occasion.
