| Reenzu to Reenzushah to Reenzushahanshah | | | Early Times Entertainment
SRINAGAR, June 27: With the exception of a small section of bureaucracy, hardly anybody in the state knew it until the other day that the government's spokesman and Director of Information, Farooq Reenzu, himself was one among the complainants and litigants against the government. Notwithstanding burning his midnight oil in projecting the government and promoting Bulbulshahi cult of the Islamic mysticism, Reenzu has been at the receiving end of the establishment that has been benevolent to everybody pro-Azadi and pro-Pakistan.
Omar Abdullah's government realized Reenzu's importance and utility within weeks of his transfer to Local Bodies Kashmir last year. He was recalled in the thick of "Intifada 2010". Government's nervousness was evident from the decade's joke of inducting, Farooq Nazki, the 1990s-model Director of Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar, as a "Media Consultant".
It is still beyond the comprehension of one and all in the government, as well as in media, as to why a Chief Minister, who loves to be called as "the youngest", had engaged someone to manage media for a hefty Rs 50,000 a month who knew none in media after his retirement in 1998.
Civil Secretariat's 3rd Floor admits that Nazki's contribution to the government has been a damn zero. Grapevine has it that when nephew Naeem Akhtar (PDP's media chief) wanted to prove Mamaji's (Nazki's) NC government as "stupid and blind", he cited the event of Omar's picking up someone as "Media Consultant" who had exhausted all of his post-retirement energy in abusing Farooq Abdullah and the Sheikh's dynasty.
Nazki has been candidly revealing to his contacts that his job profile was nothing beyond getting his no-work-full-wages remuneration deposited into his account. Knowing bureaucracy's allergy for all lateral entries in the officialdom, Nazki needs no lessons to refresh that seeking an office in Civil Secretariat would be simply burning one's fingers.
When the government was in the midst of the Intifada whirlpool in August 2010, Reenzu The Great Man succeeded in the greater bargaining. He is said to have emphasized to Gupkar Road that he would not join back until he was allowed to retain Local Bodies as an additional portfolio. Government conceded. His elation, however, proved to be ephemeral as he was unceremoniously relieved of both the portfolios within six months. "Is this the reward of salvaging a government that was drowning?" Reenzu reportedly asked his well-wishers in the establishment who had just assured him that his DG-ship in Information was well around the corner.
It was only due to the hard work of Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, that Reenzu got back his Information portfolio. Thereafter, he stopped complaining against the "ulti Ganga" in the government. His grouse was perhaps genuine: Those who were junior to him by two to six years, had been granted IAS, while as "loyalists" like him had been marginalized and victimized by successive governments. He often referred to the 'trouble' he landed in over screening film on Sheikh Abdullah during Mufti's rule.
The 'Great Man' demonstrated plenty of perseverance while fighting "government's injustice" in the court of law. It paid dividends when he shot off a complaint to Prime Minister, asking why he had been denied IAS when even the "anti-national elements far junior to me" had been inducted. According to bureaucratic sources, it was because of Reenzu's direct representation to Prime Minister and UPSC that Government of India suspended the process of granting induction into IAS to 21 senior KAS officers.
While simultaneously promoting and fighting the government, Reenzu suddenly became Reenzushah. He claims to be one of the descendants of the Hindu monarch Renchan Shah who was the first to embrace Islam at the hands of saint Sharaf-ud-din Bulbul Shah. Reenzu's, sorry Reenzushah's reverence for Bulbul Shah is evident from the ringtone of his cellphones (9419000657 and 9419012066): "az chheh prezlaan tsopaari kasheer, Bulbul Shah chhu paadshah Bulbul Shah chhu soan ameer".
Well-wishers had cautioned Reenzushah against the consequences of his Dastaarbandi at the Khoja Diggar at Naqashband Sahab when Ali Mohammad Sagar nee Chraloo was still bracing up for the honour. In weeks, he was again shorn off the lucrative portfolio in H&UD.
Now that Reenzushah's dignity has been upheld by the court, he is said to be upgrading his surname to Reenzushahanshah---things his boss would understand possibly during his next tenure when the Information Officer of 1980 would be the chief or a member with some Commission. He is anyway, for the moment, seeking the additional charge of LAWWDA or Srinagar Development Authority. Does Kashmir need Intifada 2011 to realize Reenzushahanshah's last ambition of the service career? |
